Sunflower House is built.
1840
It is located at 130 Mount Vernon Street. The building is renovated by Charles H. Luce into a whimsical Queen Anne style cottage for artist Frank Hill Smith in 1878. Oliver Wendell Holmes subsequently calls it the “Sunflower Castle” because of the flowers carved above the entryway. Water colorist Gertrude Beals Bourne lives here beginning in 1904.
